Omaha weather: Severe storm potential early next week
NOW. OMAHA’S WEATHER LEADER METEOROLOGIST LUKE VICKERY WITH THE FORECAST. YOU TRUST. SO YOU’VE HEARD US TALK ABOUT STORM CHANCES AS WE GO INTO THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THAT RIGHT OFF THE TOP. SO THIS IS FOR TOMORROW EVENING. AND TOMORROW NIGHT THERE’S A MARGINAL RISK OUT FOR THE STORM. PREDICTION FROM THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER. THAT’S THE GREEN SHADE MOSTLY ON THE NEBRASKA SIDE AND FAR CENTRAL WESTERN IOWA. THE THREATS THERE SOME WIND AND HAIL. THE POSSIBILITY LOW THREAT OF A TORNADO IF A STORM GOT GOING. AND IF IS THE KEY WORD BECAUSE THERE’S NO GUARANTEE THERE EITHER. MONDAY. ALTHOUGH THIS LOOKS PRETTY GNARLY, THERE’S NO GUARANTEE WE GET STORMS IN OMAHA EITHER. SO THIS IS FOR MONDAY. YOU CAN SEE HOW THE SHADING GETS KIND OF DARKER AS YOU GO FURTHER OFF TO THE EAST. SO IOWA AND INTO CENTRAL IOWA UNDER THE HIGHER RISK. SOME OF OMAHA UNDER THAT ENHANCED RISK BEING A THREE OUT OF FIVE FROM THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER. AGAIN, THE HIGHER RISK IS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE EAST AND NORTH OF OMAHA. GETTING INTO MINNESOTA, FAR WESTERN WISCONSIN AND CENTRAL NORTHERN IOWA, WHERE TORNADOES, DAMAGING WIND AND HAIL ARE ALL GOING TO BE A POSSIBILITY. SO LET’S WALK THROUGH THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS ON STORM PREDICTOR, SHOW YOU WHAT’S GOING ON. A BIT OF A SOUTH BREEZE HELPING US WARM UP AS WE GO THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. WE’RE GOING TO STAY PRETTY MILD WITH SOME CLOUDS HANGING AROUND DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS TONIGHT. NOW, AS WE GET INTO YOUR EARLY SUNDAY, WE’RE GOING TO WATCH THIS WARM FRONT TRY TO LIFT FURTHER NORTH. THERE’S NOONE THE WARM FRONT. PROBABLY NOT GETTING CLOSE TO US UNTIL THE AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EVENING. THIS WARM, HUMID AIR FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO THAT’S GOING TO LIFT UP IN THE WARM SECTOR OF THIS STORM SYSTEM. THAT’S THE BETTER LIKELIHOOD OF SEEING A THUNDERSTORM, ESPECIALLY THE CLOSER YOU GET TO THIS AREA OF LOW PRESSURE. SO YOU NOTICE AS WE GET INTO MONDAY OR EXCUSE ME, SUNDAY NIGHT HERE, NO THUNDERSTORMS ON THIS COMPUTER MODEL, BUT THE ENVIRONMENT IS GOING TO BE CONDUCIVE FOR THEM. SO IF ONE DOES POP UP IT COULD STRENGTHEN QUICKLY. AND THAT’S THE SAME THING ON MONDAY, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE GET PAST THE NOON HOUR. A LOT OF WARM, HUMID AIR, A LOT OF INSTABILITY, A LOT OF SUNSHINE IN PLACE. SO THAT’S GOING TO BE A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR THUNDERSTORMS. IF ONE SPARKS. SO WE’LL WATCH THIS COLD FRONT COME THROUGH LATE ON MONDAY. AND IF A STORM SPARKS THERE IT’S LIKELY GOING TO BE STRONG TO SEVERE. ALTHOUGH COMPUTER MODELS INSISTING THAT WE WON’T GET STORMS IN OMAHA, THEY’LL BE NORTH OF US. SO THAT’S WHAT WE’RE WATCHING THE CLOSEST AS WE GO THROUGH THE NEXT FEW DAYS. ONCE THE COLD FRONT SWEEPS OUT, YOUR TUESDAY IS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE A FAIRLY NICE DAY. ALL RIGHT, HERE’S A LOOK OUTSIDE. RIGHT NOW. THERE’S SOME CLOUDS OFF IN THE DISTANCE, BUT NOTHING CRAZY 65 DEGREES. OUR CURRENT TEMPERATURE SITTING IN THE 60S FOR MOST AREAS. A COUPLE 50S WHERE YOU’VE SEEN MORE CLOUDS LINGER. THERE’S SOME OF THE CLOUDS. THEY’VE BEEN OVERHEAD FOR A WHILE, HOUR BY HOUR FORECAST FOR THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON. AND THE EVENING WILL SLOWLY DESCEND INTO THE LOWER 50S OUTSIDE THE LOW TEMPERATURE TONIGHT, ONLY 53 DEGREES. SO AGAIN, IT’S GOING TO BE PRETTY MILD FOR THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. WITH THE CLOUDS HANGING AROUND AND A BIT OF A BREEZE. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE GETTING INTO THE UPPER 60S FOR YOUR SUNDAY. SO THERE IS GOING TO BE SOME INSTABILITY IN THE AIR, ESPECIALLY AS WE GET LATER INTO THE EVENING AND NIGHTTIME HOURS WHEN THAT SOUTH WIND REALLY STRENGTHENS AND WE GET IN THE WARM SECTOR OF THAT STORM SYSTEM. SO AGAIN, NO GUARANTEE FOR STORMS, BUT ESPECIALLY ON MONDAY IF A STORM DOES DEVELOP NEAR THAT COLD FRONT, IT’S GOING TO LIKELY BE A SEVERE STORM. SO STAY TUNED WITH US AS WE GET CLOSER TO MONDAY. BUT IT LOOKS LIKE BETTER WEATHER IS IN 70 COMING BY THE MIDDLE AND END OF NEXT WEEK.
